Breach: Hacker “invaded” 150,000 security cameras

A hacker team had access to 150,000 security cameras, which exploited a security breach at Verkada Inc. and monitored live streaming from surveillance cameras in hospitals, companies, police services, prisons, and schools.

Its victims include software provider Cloudflare Inc. but also the company Verkada Inc.. The hackers say that they also had access to the full video file of all Verkada Inc. customers.

The well-known company Tesla Inc. as well as the Florida Halifax Health Hospital, also saw footage from their facility’s security cameras being published. More specifically, in a video, employees appear, on the assembly line, in a Tesla warehouse in Shanghai, but also the employees of the Florida hospital, appearing to restrain a man in his bed.

The data breach was carried out by an international hacker group and was intended to show how easily video surveillance systems could be breached, said Tillie Kottmann, one of the hackers who claimed to have breached Verkada Inc. headquarters. in San Mateo, California.

Hackers gain access to Verkada Inc. through a “Super Admin” account, allowing them to view all its clients’ cameras as well as gain “root” access to the cameras, which means they could use the cameras to execute their code.
