Ransomware attack in two hospitals

The electronic systems in the hospitals “Sotiria” and “Asklipieio Voulas” fell “victim” to cyber blackmailers.

The electronic systems in the hospitals “Sotiria” and “Asklipieio Voulas” fell “victim” to cyber blackmailers. On January 17, it was reported that they had been attacked by ransomware, in which the perpetrators locked their target files seeking ransom in a cryptocurrency for their release. The perpetrators hit a server that serves the accounting and administrative system of both hospitals. This is another blow of this kind in a structure of the wider State, after the cyber attacks, among others, on the Hellenic Defense Systems and the Municipality of Thessaloniki last year.

The infected server has been housed since 2003 in the facilities of the 1st Health District of Attica. The commander of the 1st RAE, Panagiotis Stathis, confirmed to “K” that the attack was carried out with ransomware. He added that the National Cyber Security Authority and all relevant services were immediately informed and that there was no logic in negotiating with the attackers. The name of the malware, the origin of the attack, the way in which they managed to gain access, nor the amount of ransom demanded by the perpetrators were not clarified in “K”. According to one version, the main target of the blackmailers was “Sotiria”, one of the largest hospitals in the country, which has been found by the first wave of the pandemic at the center of the treatment of COVID-19. Based on this assessment of those in charge, the “Asclepieion” was hit due to the electronic co-housing.
