36 Billion files leaked, according to a report!

Billions of files were exposed worldwide, reaching a total of 36 billion, according to Risk Based Security. The company said in a report on research that 2020 was the worst year ever recorded, even before 8.3 billion extra files were exposed in the third quarter, although there was a decrease in breaches during the first three quarters of the year. 51% and 2,953 violations.

Security Chief Sales Officer, Inga Goddijn from Risk Based says this could be explained by the increase in ransomware attacks. Although these attacks accounted for 21% of reported violations in the first three quarters, many of them may not have been recorded yet.

In particular, Goddijn stated that several attacks are incidents of violations not reported to the competent regulatory authorities and their disclosure due to the nature of the data. This results in an event not being reported by an organization due to data sensitivity.

The report points out that among the organizations affected, the health sector was the one that received the most cases of violations, accounting for 11.5% of the total cases that took place.

It is worth mentioning that two violations exposed more than one billion files and four violations that reported more than 100 million files in the third quarter of the year, which in total correspond to about eight billion exposed files.

The report’s findings appear to be in line with those of the Identity Theft Resource Center, which has publicly reported violations in the United States. He recently pointed out that the volume of these incidents is on “good track for the lowest rate since 2015”.
