The commission’s new proposal brings Gigabit connections to all Europeans

The European Commission’s plan predicts that by 2030 all households in the EU should be connected to the Internet with 1 gigabit per second speed at least, according to the European Commission’s proposal for technology and innovation.

Having followed the right direction and guided by the “Digital Compass 2030”, the Commission aims to develop the first European quantum computer and the EU to be one-fifth of the world’s semiconductor producer.

Before it gets published, the official document came into the possession of Reuters, shortly before its official presentation, by Commission Vice-President Margaret Vestager and Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton.

The proposal recognizes the importance of investing in semiconductors to reduce Europe’s dependence on American and Asian technologies – the plan comes amid a global chip shortage that is forcing carmakers to cut production.

“The level of ambition we are proposing predicts that by 2030 the production of sustainable semiconductors in Europe, including processors, will account for at least 20% of world production in value,” the document said.

The EU predicts that by 2030 the quantum computer will be developed, among other things, and will contribute to the development of pharmaceutical products. In addition, the Commission’s plan envisages the development of cloud computing infrastructure and the doubling of companies with a market value of at least 1 billion euros.

The Commission’s plan based on the proposal states that all EU countries should be covered by 5G networks with connections that will reach at least 1Gbps.

The only thing that keeps us away from the implementation of the plan is to be voted and approved by all member states and the European Parliament.
