European authorities have put an end to the most dangerous malware in the world

Law enforcement agencies in eight countries have put a definitive end to the operation of Emotet, the most well-known malware in Windows, as it has counted several victims over the past decade. The malware worked with botnet and ransomware attacks as it collected data via email.

“Emotet acted as a primary door opener to computer systems worldwide,” Europol said, adding that what made the malware so dangerous is that the malware was offered for hire to other cybercriminals to install other types of malware, such as banking Trojans or ransomware, onto a victim’s computer.”

The operation was dubbed “Operation Ladybird” and coordinated law enforcement is a joint effort between authorities of Germany, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Lithuania, Canada, Ukraine, and the Netherlands which led to the takedown of the botnet and to take control of servers used to run and maintain the malware network.
