Criminals are using the well-known LinkedIn platform as reported by the British intelligence service MI5 to their advantage, reaching more than 10.000 users in the last five years.
Criminals disguise themselves as “recruiters” and then connect through the platform in order to extract valuable and sensitive information from people who have access. More specifically, criminals approach the potential target victim through the platform and then present lucrative business opportunities that should not be missed.
The National Center for Infrastructure (CPNI), in an effort to raise awareness of the threat, launched the “Think Before You Link” campaign to inform users that linking to such profiles on platforms such as LinkedIn could cause serious problems, to affect the smooth running of organizations but also endanger the national security and prosperity of the United Kingdom.
The well-known platform reports on the fact that the relevant departments are working to maintain the platform a “healthy” environment so that real people can connect with professionals.
